I Have My Quirks
1. First, decide which yarn you will use for your main color. This should be the yarn you have most of so you can use it throughout the entire hat. (My main color was the green WOTAS Aurora Heather.) Then decide on a needle size and the number of stitches you want to cast on depending on what size hat you're making. If you don't already know how many stitches to cast on or are unsure which needle size to use, do a swatch or two to figure it out. This should tell you how many stitches you need to cast on for the size hat you want to make, and which size needles will give you the results you like best.* My gauge was around 23 sts/4 in. (measured hat after blocking.)
2. Cast on stitches using your main color and join in the round, making sure not to twist your stitches. To make a rib exactly like mine, the number of stitches you cast on needs to be divisible by 4. I cast on 108 sts. on size US 6 circular needles.
3. Make a 2x2 rib (*k2, p2* to end) as high as you'd like it (I made mine 1"). Then knit a full round or two more (still in the main color).
4. Choose a new color from your scraps to work next. Join it in and cut the main color yarn you were working with, leaving a 4-6" tail to weave in. Knit with the new color until you get to a point where you only have a 4-6" tail left. Then, join in your main color again for the remainder of that round. Only knit with your main color yarn until you reach the end of the round!
Repeat step 4 until the hat measures about 9-10" (or however tall you'd like it to be before you start your decreases) then move on to step 5. The stripes worked in the main color will start at all different sections of the hat depending on where you ran out of each contrast color as you went around. You are only finishing the round with the main color yarn, then switching to the new color you want to use at the beginning of the next round. If a color runs out at the very end of a round, just knit a full round using the main color yarn, then switch to the next scrap of your choice for the new round. For the yarns you have larger quantities of, choose when you would like to stop using the color depending on how it's clashing with the others in the hat. For a couple of the colors I used a bit of the yarn in one section then saved some to use in another section instead of using it all together at once.
5. When the hat measures about 9-10" (or however tall you're making it to your liking) start your decreases. I did 6-8 rounds of k2tog decreases to bring it all together quickly at the top.
6. After you are done decreasing, cut a tail long enough to pull through the remaining stitches, pull it through and fasten it tight. Then weave in the ends and block if desired!

*Here are some links for beginners that I found useful when I was starting out:
For information on calculating gauge and your cast on stitch count, this article from Craftsy is pretty straightforward.
For information on hat sizing, I have referred to this chart from Bev's Country Cottage multiple times.
For information on calculating decreases for the crown, I've always found this post from Aroha Knits helpful.

Continue in pattern until you have 148 rows in total, or until piece measures 14.5” lengthwise from bottom point of triangle to top center, and 28” wide* from top left point to top right point.**
*For wider kerchief, continue in pattern until desired width is reached.
Row 149 (final row): BO all sts purlwise.
Weave in ends. Block to finish.
**For alternate i-cord straps:
Follow Noona pattern as written until kerchief is desired width & length. From here on you can choose Option 1 or 2:
1)
BO all sts. with RS facing. Pick up the first 2 sts. along left side of BO edge. Knit an I-cord until chord measures 15.5" or desired length. BO sts. Do the same for the right side I-cord. Weave in ends.
2)
With remaining sts. held on waste yarn or circular needles, knit I-cord on right side edge using first 2 sts. until cord measures 15.5" or desired length. To work left I-cord BO remaining sts. on kerchief until last 2 sts. remain on the left side of your triangle. Knit left I-cord to same length as right I-cord. BO sts. and weave in ends.

--------------------------------------------------------
*Before you begin knitting, cut ten 70” pieces of your CC yarn.
*Only use contrast color when K1CC is specified. Make sure to twist MC yarn around CC yarn when working CC stitches.
*After the ribbing in step 1, the section of step 3 that reads: *K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2* will be repeated throughout this pattern. Repeat this portion of step 3 where specified when you arrive at an * * in the pattern.
Begin Pattern:
CO 100 sts. Join in round.
1. K2, *P1, K1, P1, K2,P1, K1, P1* to last 2 sts, K2.
2. Repeat 1st step for 13 ROUNDS (1.5 in.) to complete ribbing.
3. The contrast color yarns will be joined in during this round. Whenever you come to a K1CC, join in the contrasting yarn and knit one stitch in the contrast color, then switch back to the main color until you come across a K1CC again.
K1, P8, K2, P14, *K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2, P1, K1CC, P2, K1CC, P1, K2* P14, K2, P8, K1

Key:
co: cast on
k: knit
p: purl
pm: place marker
k2tog: knit 2 stitches together (decrease)
mc: main color yarn
cc: contrast color yarn
Pattern:
co 110 sts using cc yarn. Join in round as you start working the following step.
First, you will work a 2x2 rib:
*k2, p2* to last 2 sts, k2. pm.
Work 16 rounds total like this or until rib measures approximately 2 inches. (DON’T pm after the first round, just keep that first marker you placed on your needles for the rest of the pattern.)
Next:
Continuing in cc yarn, k all sts. for 2 rounds total.
Join in mc yarn and cut cc yarn, leaving a 4-6” tail to weave in.
Using mc yarn, k all sts. for 14 rounds total.
Now you will work 18 rounds total (2.5”) of the stranded vertical stripes:
Join in cc yarn.
*k2 cc, k2 mc* to last 2 sts, k2 cc.
AFTER you have worked 18 rounds (2.5”) in this fashion to form vertical stripes, cut cc yarn, leaving a 4-6” tail to weave in.
Next, the horizontal stripes:
Using mc yarn, k all sts. for 2 rounds.
Using cc yarn, k all sts. for 6 rounds.
Using mc yarn, k all sts. for 2 rounds again.
Using cc yarn, k all sts. for 6 rounds again.
Using mc yarn, k all sts. for 8 rounds.
(74 rounds worked in hat pattern so far.)
Now the first round of decreases to start the crown:
Continuing in mc yarn, *k9, k2tog, pm* to last 11 sts, k9, k2tog.
Now follow the step below until 10 sts. remain on the needles, switching to double point needles when necessary:
*k to 2 sts before marker, k2tog.* Repeat to end of round.
When 10 sts. remain on the needles, pull tail through the remaining 10 sts. and secure tight.
Weave in all ends.
Block if desired.
*If you would like a "jogless" join in the back of your hat (since this is knit in the round), here are some good tutorials on achieving that:
